Pair of Aussie Jockeys in Reckless Riding Troubles
Careless riding and negligence can get jockeys into quite a bit of trouble and this last week has been proof of that as a couple of Australian jockeys find themselves facing serious repercussions. Craig Williams faces a 10 meeting ban for a charge of careless riding, while Mark Zahra will be facing a private law suit which, if successful, will see his insurance company pay out over $1.4 million in damages.
Careless Riding Leads To Ban
Last season saw Craig Williams win the Premiership with some spectacular showings, but last Saturday he got himself into a bit of trouble. The jockey rode at Moonee Valley and following the meeting was charged with careless riding, which landed him a 10 meeting ban, a serious punishment for the top notch jockey.
Williams appears to be furious with the decision and has promised to appeal against it, probably following the Flemington meeting this Saturday for which he was not banned.
$1.4 Million Race Fall
All the way back in 2010, jockey Mark Zahra caused a fall that left Danny Brereton with internal head injuries and serious problems to his overall health. WorkCover are now suing the jockey, claiming they have paid out over $1.4 million in claims to the suffering Brereton. WorkCover are now claiming that the fall happened as a result of negligence on Zehra's part, and are suing the jockey for the amount they have paid out.
If Zehra should lose, he will not be paying out of his own pocket, as the jockey is insured with Racing Australia's public liability insurance, a company that deals with insuring the jockeys against such incidents. This incident has once again made it clear how important it is for jockeys to be insured, as incidents like this one are very common in the industry and the law suits tend to get pretty significant in size when they do happen.
