Protest Over SuperTab Dividend

SuperTab tote that was disgraceful

Last Saturday the eighth race at Eagle Farm was a 13 horse field restricted to runners without a metropolitan win. At the racetrack second favourite, Darcy D'Or firmed a little from $4.00 to $3.80. He finished third.

Best tote place odds were $1.60, not particularly good value. SuperTab paid $1.00 money back. That is absolutely disgraceful - one of the worst examples I have seen for a while. The field was a decent size and the horse didn't even start favourite. With winning odds like that punters, you've got no chance.

Our suggestion is for everyone who backed Darcy D'Or on SuperTab or has been paid money back only on any other recent "winning bet" to send an e-mail/letter of complaint to the tote and tell them they will never back a horse again for a place on that tote. Totes lost me back in the early 1980s when a horse I backed for a place returned $1.00 money back - and missed the place! I have never backed a horse for a place on the tote again.

As the horses were moving into the barriers for the first at Eagle Farm, a very ordinary 2200 metres restricted race, what we call here plodders' races, Sky Racing's "expert" at the track, Larry Olsen, offered this advice:

"As we see, Turnerz is pretty short, so if you really want to sort of get away from him, not that I would, I'll throw in the five, Our Gang... he's an old horse but still looked extremely well, but in these races over the 1800, they can be hard."

Hmmnn...

1. The race was 2200 metres, not 1800 metres.

2. Turnerz was poor odds of $2.20 on the tote compared to $3.00 in the bookmakers' betting ring. Tote punters at home were not given any indication of that. Despite being "pretty short" Larry Olsen seemed to think Turnerz was value and said that "I would" not get away from the horse.

3. Has Larry Olsen has contradicted himself? If the race is, to quote Larry Olsen, "hard" why recommend a horse at $2.20 on the tote?? Wouldn't you need better odds in a "hard" race?

4. Fancy throwing in Our Gang, a nine year old gelding with a paltry four wins from 51 starts! Our Gang finished ninth of 11.

The correct advice was not to bet in the race.

Warning
Short Priced Tote Favourites

These are losing bets.
Look at the table below and see the percentages lost backing short priced tote favourites compared with bookmaker betting ring prices.

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on the tote.
If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.
