TAB Betting Tips

Betting on the tote requires a different approach to getting official top betting ring fluctuation with bookmakers or betting at the track.

1. No short priced tote favourites should be backed. They are very poor value on the tote and it is just about guaranteed that punters must lose long term backing them.

2. The minimum win price you should be looking at is around $6.00 to $7.00.

3. Each way betting on the tote is very poor value. You do not get one quarter place odds. Eg. If you back a horse each way at $5.00 with the bookmaker in an eight horse field you get $2.00 the place. If the horse places you break even on the race. That does not happen on the tote. You might get $1.50 the place.

4. Similarly place betting on the tote should be avoided. It is poor value. It is far better long term to back two horses for the win at big odds on the tote than one horse each way at big odds on the tote.

1800 metres sprint!

Backers of Our Eeyore $15.00 ridden by Brian York and Corporate $12.00 ridden by Matthew Privato were more than complaining during the third at Rosehill, a restricted race over 1800 metres.

These horses had absolutely no chance. They were going hammer and tongs at each, other many lengths ahead of the field. Needless to say Our Eeyore finished fifth in the 10 horse field, beaten by over 10 lengths while Corporate finished ninth, beaten by nearly 20 lengths.

When questioned by stewards Brian York said that he was instructed to ride his mount forward. He did that, but when racing outside Corporate his mount took charge, and overraced as Corporate was overracing. So York tried to take the lead, but Corporate maintained his position on the rails inside of Our Eeyore. York then tried to restrain Our Eeyore who continued to overrace.

The stewards' observations and video supported York. That also lets you know why Our Eeyore, a handy five year old gelding who has won over $140,000 in prize money, has only won six races from 46 starts. A horse with bad racing manners does that.

As for Corporate - dismiss the run. Prior to the race the five year old gelding had seven wins and five seconds from 23 starts. He had won twice and finished second three times from his previous five starts.

Warning
Short Priced Tote Favourites

These are losing bets.
Look at the table below and see the percentages lost backing short priced tote favourites compared with bookmaker betting ring prices.

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on the tote.
If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.
