False Horse Racing Favourites

Magic Duck - no magic here

Magic Duck convincingly won by three lengths at Canterbury two weeks earlier. She was clearly a false favourite when punters sent her out at short odds of $2.50 at Randwick over 1300 metres. This was even pointed out on our Forum by Pro-Punter analyst "Lucky Lil" the day before the race. Consider these points:

1. Magic Duck had never raced at the Randwick Inner track which is very much a specialist's track.

2. Magic Duck was rising in weight from 56kg. to 58.5kg.

3. Magic Duck had the widest barrier in the nine horse field.

Magic Duck showed early speed and worked to the lead. But she weakened in the straight and fell into third place, beaten by a few lengths.

Manetti - no luck

At Victoria Park six year old gelding Manetti was all the rage in the Open over 1300 metres and sent out $2.40 favourite. However he was lumbered with 59.5kg. after his regular rider, apprentice Michael Hoppo's three kilos claim. Consider these points:

1. Manetti was rising in weight from 57.5kg. to 59.5kg.

2. Manetti had barrier 10 of 11 in the 11 horse field.

3. Manetti won his previous race at the track three weeks earlier leading throughout but started from barrier one and carried two kilos less.

Manetti tried to lead from barrier 10 but was still three wide outside the leaders in a hectic battle for the lead after travelling 400 metres. He finally managed to get to the lead but couldn't cross to the rails.

Manetti folded in the straight. The run should be forgotten. Clearly Manetti was also a false favourite.

What was absolutely staggering was that Our Jermyn Street won the race first up setting a new track record and started at the amazing odds of $21.00. This lightly raced five year old gelding had three wins from 11 starts, had only missed a place twice and had an excellent first up record with a win and four placings from five starts. We gave the horse as a Jackpot Selection to our High Flyer members.
