Punters were left licking their wounds after what can only be described as an absolute horror meeting. Tough, even, large fields, the rail out three metres and a Fast track contributed to the disaster. That's right, a Fast track. There has been a deliberate policy in recent years to water tracks so as to avoid Fast tracks and have Good rated tracks instead.

Was that policy suddenly thrown out the window? Why, for one of the biggest meetings of the year in Sydney, did we have a track completely different to what the horses were normally racing on?

When we heard the track rating was Fast we were very tempted to abandon the meeting. We didn't. Next time well know better.

Taking $4.00 or shorter odds in big fields is usually risky. In the above table the short priced favourites in big fields all failed to win.

Also at Sandown on Saturday in a 16 horse field Belle Ball started as $3.20 favourite and finished ninth. While at Cheltenham in a 15 horse field Mottram started as $4.00 favourite and finished second.

Jockey out of form?

We've been saying it for a while now. Glen Boss, when he is on a horse with a wide barrier draw has been finding trouble avoiding a wide run.

In the big Group 1 Australia Stakes last Saturday, Lady Mulan was given no chance. From barrier 13 she was midfield, wide throughout without cover. An average jockey can usually ride a horse well from a good barrier draw. What distinguishes the top class jockeys from the rest is what they do from poor barrier draws.
