Sheraton disappointing

He resumed last Saturday at Flemington from a spell of five months in a 2YO Open over 1000 metres. Sent out the short priced $3.50 favourite, according to jockey Mark Flaherty, he was the first horse beaten when he failed to respond when put under pressure.

Perhaps the hefty top weight of 58kg. had something to do with it? When he won last time in he carried 54kg.

Expect the unexpected

Last Saturday at Morphettville in a 1050 metres 2YO Fillies Open Raja Lane put in a top run. She was up in weight to 57kg. and had barrier 13. Her odds of $3.80 were very skinny - no value there. We liked Raja Lane, but at $8.00, not $3.80.

The winner was well bred first starter, My Duchess out of Royal Academy and a Bluebird mare. My Duchess paid $14.70 for the win. In the 13 horse field there were numerous very lightly raced fillies and five first starters. Hardly the sort of race to be taking short odds about anything.

Who backed him again?

On June 23 Corps Commander started at $1.50 in Adelaide and finished a close third as the $1.50 odds on favourite. However this well above average four year old gelding still had an excellent strike rate with seven wins and another six places from only 16 starts.

Trainer Mark Kavanagh then sent him to Melbourne, where he contested a 1000 metres Open Handicap at Flemington last Saturday. He also dropped 3kg. in weight to 53kg. $6.50 was available and he won well. He was also our top rated selection.

Wonder how many of the punters who took $1.50 about him two weeks earlier followed up and backed him at Flemington when some decent odds were available?
