Horse Racing Betting Tips

Alf Matthews well done!

Good to see Sky Racing's Melbourne man on the spot come up with the following comment. When he made Rain Gauge his top selection in the second at Caulfield last Saturday, with the price around $5.00, he added, "I don't think it's value."

Now that's what a top selection should be - the horse you believe has the best chances of winning a race, irrespective of whether a decent price is available.

John Hawkes again

Unfortunately in the same race Alf Matthews couldn't have a bar of the John Hawkes' trained Philotimo. Philotimo was backing up from a run at Sandown only three days earlier. In that race Philotimo lost his position around the home turn, but finished the race off very nicely.

Philotimo won the race at Caulfield backed in on track from $8.00 to $5.50!

When Pioneer won at bolters' odds at Eagle Farm on June 30 this year John Hawkes sent the five year old gelding around again at Eagle Farm only four days later. Pioneer won again.

John Hawkes is an astute trainer. When he backs up a horse a few days after its previous run you are being given a tip straight from John Hawkes. It is up to you whether you want to take the tip or ignore it.

One for the black book

At Eagle Farm, tough five year old gelding Aflac dropped down in class to a Class 6 Handicap after a strong run in a 2MW race two weeks earlier. To compensate he rose in weight from 57kg. to 59.5kg.

That was not all. He was also dropping back in distance from 1600 metres to 1300 metres. The double whammy of a major drop back in distance combined with a considerable weight increase should have just about eliminated Aflac as a serious winning chance.

However trainer Bill Mitchell engaged leading Brisbane hoop Stathi Katsidis. Aflac was run off his legs early. However he flew over the last 200 metres and just missed out by the barest of margins.

It's certainly worth keeping a black book of training feats.
At Pro-Punter we wouldn't be without one.

As you make more entries and gather more evidence you will be able to catch some very good winners. Bill Mitchell, for example, may drop back another horse in distance by a similar amount. This time the horse may be well weighted. Where the racing media and other punters will write it off because of the major drop back in distance, meaning lucrative odds, you will know better.
