Favourite Way to Lose

There were 37 races held over the four days of the Flemington Spring Carnival. Here are the winning favourites:
November   9 - Rebel With A Cause 13/8, Emission 9/4. 
November 11 - The Collector 2/1, Flavour 4/1.
No wonder many punters lost their betting money. . 

Taking short odds about horses on a consistent basis in big fields and wide open races with conflicting form lines due to interstate horses competing is a guaranteed way to lose money.

The only way to win at the punt is by getting value.
When you back a horse you must know whether you are getting value.

If you back a horse at 4/1 it must have at least a one in five (20% chance) of winning that race. If not, you are not getting value. 

If you back a horse at 9/1 it must have at least a one in ten (10% chance) of winning that race. If not, you are not getting value.
