Vainqueur, now that's consistency for you

This unheralded four year old gelding convincingly won a 1000 metres
handicap at Eagle Farm on Saturday. His first run this campaign was
on December 30 last year. He has now had four wins and three seconds
this time in, including losing one race on protest.

        Huge class drop

Always be on the look out for big class drops, particularly if the
horse is not carrying the grandstand. Last Saturday at Caulfield Noircir
was in a 1400 metres Mares Open. After the claim for apprentice,
James Winks, who has been riding well recently, she came in with only
54kg. Her previous 15 starts were all at Black-type level.

First up two months ago in a listed race at Mornington carrying 54kg.
she was only beaten two lengths by Le Zagaletta. She was also
beaten under four lengths in the Caulfield Futurity Stakes, a Group
1 Weight for Age race over 1400 metres where she carried 55.5kg. In
that race she would have been right in the finish but for being badly
checked and held up in the straight. We top rated her. She found the
class drop to her liking and won well paying $8.90 on the New
          South Wales tote.

        Max Power flops

Unbeaten two year old gelding Max Power was sent out as $1.80
favourite at Caulfield in a six horse field over 1100 metres. Three
of the other runners were first up. One of them, Crystal Finale,
with good Black-type form in the Spring easily won the race. Max Power
finished fifth, beaten by seven lengths.

You wonder what information the backers of Max Power were using to know
that not one of the first up brigade was going to be:
          1. Set for the race.
          2. Run a top race.
          3. Crystal Finale with far superior form to Max Power was going to perform
many lengths below his Spring form.
