TAB Fixed Odds Betting

Should you take a fixed odds win bet now for the Doncaster Handicap run on March 30?

If you believe the New South Wales TAB promotion you should. Last Friday in The Sportsman their promotion was headed:

"Back Ha Ha today and you'll be laughing in March."

New South Wales TAB further added:

"After a great victory last weekend, TAB Fixed Odds has installed Ha Ha as second favourite in their opening market for the $2.5m...Doncaster to be run on March 30. And if you think she'll win, there's no better way to show that you know your racing than by placing a bet on the Doncaster now. But hurry, because as the race gets closer, Ha Ha's price may shorten. And believe me, that's no laughing matter."

However, consider these points.

1. A lot can happen between now and March 30. If Ha Ha or any other horse you like does not run, your bet is wiped out. You will lose every dollar you put on the horse without even getting a run.

2. You do not have this vital information:
a) The field.
b) The latest form of all the runners.
c) The barrier draw.
d) The jockeys.
e) The track conditions.

New South Wales TAB says, "...there's no better way to show that you know your racing than by placing a bet on the Doncaster now. "

In our opinion by placing a bet on the Doncaster now, two months ahead of the race, without all the vital information you need to make an informed, intelligent bet, you will actually show you do not know your racing.

New South Wales TAB also say, "...hurry, because as the race gets closer, Ha Ha's price may shorten. And believe me, that's no laughing matter."

We have reworded that in line with our view on intelligent punting.

"... as the race gets closer, Ha Ha may become a non-runner. You will lose your bet without a run for your money. And believe us, that's no laughing matter."

There's no rush to place a bet two months before a race.

Warning
Short Priced Tote Favourites

These are losing bets.
Look at the table below and see the percentages lost backing short priced tote favourites compared with the top official bookmaker betting ring prices.

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on the tote.
If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.

If you did, see the minimum prices you should have received.
