Two Year Old Betting Disaster

The less available form there is about horses in a race the more likely it will be a blow out for punters. The first race at Caulfield on Saturday, July 22, got punters away to a very poor start.

It was a two year old open on a Slow track over 1000 metres. There were 14 runners in this race. Four of them had not had a race start. There were three horses that had raced only twice. Another six horses had raced only once including one of them, Regal Shot, which was resuming from a six months spell. At his only start, a two year old maiden at Benalla he started at 3/1 and finished last, beaten by nine lengths. At Caulfield there was a little specking for him and he firmed on track from 40/1 to 20/1 and won the race.

The 11/4 favourite Happy Jackpot finished second last, beaten by 15 lengths. We also had a selection in the race, Jazz Star. He had the formlines to qualify.

Three weeks earlier at Sandown Jazz Star put in a great run on the rain affected track. It was reasonable to expect an improved performance at Caulfield. It was anything but. Jazz Star, backed in on track from 8/1 to 13/2 finished third last, beaten out of sight. At least there was some sort of excuse, as he was inconvenienced around the home turn. Not much comfort, though.... The unpredictability of yet another two year old race.
