Sheikh Mohammed's Godolphin team would like nothing more than to get their hands on the Emirates Melbourne Cup, and in the rapidly progressive Ahzeemah they might at last have just the right type to carry off Australia's most prestigious horse race. Ahzeemah took his time before showing that he really had serious ability, until the summer of 2012 appearing to be no more than a fair handicapper. Two wins at Ascot however in hot handicap company that summer showed that the four-year-old son of Dubawi was on the up, and he continued his climb through the ranks with four fine efforts in Meydan last winter never finishing out of the first two and winning the Group 3 Nad Al Sheba Trophy. After a spring break, the Saeed bin Suroor-trained colt ran two fine races when runner-up to Universal in Group 2 company at Newmarket, then to Brown Panther (a fellow Melbourne Cup entry) in the Group 2 Goodwood Cup over two miles. He then well and truly hit the target when holding off the classy Simenon, (another bound for 'the race that stops a nation'), in the Group 2 Yorkshire Cup, before running second to Voleuse de Coeurs on the Group 1 Irish St Leger at the Curragh. Everything about Ahzeemah shouts that the horse is still improving. He settles well and can demonstrate a useful change of gear that sets him apart from many staying types in the racing betting, a trait that should stand him in good stead for the rough and tumble of the ultra-competitive Melbourne Cup. Currently available as a horse racing bet of 40/1 for the Melbourne Cup, Ahzeemah might well prove the value bet in this year's renewal of the showcase two-mile handicap, so those considering the form would be wise to give the Godolphin candidate serious consideration.
