Here are some commonly used horse racing terms. If
you would like any words added to the list please e-mail us.
Box Trifecta: Usually four or five horses are
"boxed" in a trifecta. If three of the horses selected all finish
in the first three placings, the punter collects for a winning trifecta.
Double: You have to correctly select the winner in two specific
races.
Each way: An each way bet is when you have the same amount on the
horse for a win and for a place. Bookmakers will give you one quarter
of the win odds for a place in fields of eight or more and one third of
the win odds in fields of six or seven horses.
Each way odds: Four to one ( now $5.00 ) with the bookmakers because
if the horse does not win but finishes second or third, the punter's wager
is refunded in full and the punter does not lose on the race.
Exacta: You have to correctly select the first two horses in a race
in the exact order.
First Four: You have to correctly select the first four horses in
the correct order in the nominated races. There are some big collects
on this bet.
Length: A length is approximately three metres.
Odds on: This a bet where you have to outlay more than you win. For
example, if a horse is two to one on ( now $1.50 ) you have to outlay
two dollars to win one dollar and your total collect if the horse wins
is three dollars. That is made up of your original two dollars and the
one dollar you win.
On the nose: Backing a horse to win only.
Place: A horse runs a place if it finishes in the first three in fields
of eight or more horses. If there are only six or seven runners
the horse must finish first or second to place.
Ptarmigan: Small bird that has nothing to do with
horse racing. We just put this in to see if you were paying attention.
Quadrella: You have to correctly select the winner of four specific
races nominated by your TAB. The selected races vary from state to state.
Quinella: You have to correctly select the first two horses in
a race in any order.
Running Double: You have to correctly select the winner in two
consecutive races.
Straight Six: You have to correctly select the winner of six consecutive
nominated races. There are some huge collects available if you can!
Trifecta: You have to correctly select the first three horses in
a race in the exact order.
