Horse Racing Betting Tips

Restricted races

Restricted races are often tricky betting affairs with upset results. They become even more so when the distance is 1000-1200 metres with plenty of first up runners or gets above 1600 metres.

Take a dramatic case in point on Monday at Rosehill.

There was rain throughout the day and the track was well on the way to being a genuine Slow by the time of the fifth race, a 3YO resticted race over 1900 metres.

Tara Success, had never run closer than 3.7 lengths from the winner at his only four starts. The gelding had also never finished better than sixth. He had also raced over 1900 metres in weaker company and been beaten by nearly seven lengths.

Tara Success won by over a length and paid over $217 for the win on SuperTab, the Victorian tote.

So much for weights

The Brian Mayfield-Smith trained Galapagos Girl caused a huge upset for most punters by winning the Group 3 Frances Tressady Stakes at Flemington on Monday. The 4YO mare paid tote odds up to $20.80.

Third, half a length behind was Flash Bash. 16 days earlier these mares met at Caulfield over the same distance, 1400 metres.

On that day Galapagos Girl carried 53.5kg. to victory. Flash Bash finished only 0.3 lengths behind Galapagos Girl, but carried 55.5kg, two kilos more than Galapagos Girl.

But on Monday Galapagos Girl carried 57kg., while Flash Bash still only carried 55.5kg. That meant Galapagos Girl met Flash Bash 3.5kg. worse at the weights for defeating her by only 0.3 lengths.

The race was a clear example where relative weights proved irrelevant.

Warning
Short Priced Tote Favourites

These are losing bets.

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites to make up for the big unders on the tote.

If you regularly get poor tote odds you must lose.
