Trifecta check

Have a look at these payouts from 19th. May:

Morphettville Race Four

SuperTab (Victoria) $5571
Queensland TAB $8085
TAB Limited (New South Wales) $4408

Eagle Farm Race Six

SuperTab (Victoria) $6734
Queensland TAB $8765
TAB Limited (New South Wales) $5276

Of course the New South Wales TAB will not always pay the smallest dividends. But as we have pointed out in the past their "FlexiBet" has devalued trifectas, particularly those monster payouts. If you make the collects easier, as "FlexiBet" has done, but do not increase the amount of money being returned to punters, then of course the dividends decrease.

It looks like punters who were winning on the New South Wales tote because of the occasional huge trifecta collect will now find it that much harder.

Who's wearing the blinkers?

Sometimes it looks like the punters are wearing the blinkers and not the horses. How else can you explain Tempest Morn being backed in from $2.20 to $1.90 in the 3YO Fillies Group1 South Australian Oaks last Saturday?

Tempest Morn had an ordinary barrier in nine. There were also 15 other runners in the field. Tempest Morn starting at $1.90 meant that the rest of the field, the other 15 runners, were given less winning chance than Tempest Morn alone. Just a cursory, objective look at the form of the other runners would tell you that was not right.

Tempest Morn finished a well beaten second while the maiden galloper, Asia, a non-winner from her previous 16 starts, won the race. Some of the punters clearly wore blinkers.

Brilliant effort

The 1200 metres Listed Handicap at Eagle Farm was won effortlessly by that outstanding grey, Make Mine Magic. Despite dropping back in distance from 1400 metres, two weeks earlier, to 1200 metres he quickly settled on the speed, and won with plenty in reserve.

Read the wrong one liner?

Have you noticed how the race callers just about always come up with a one liner about the horse after it has won. You know the sort of stuff:
"He put the writing on the wall last start with a strong finish."
"The horse was right down in the weights today."
So it goes on.

One simple method to ensure you can always come up with a one liner for the winner is to have a one liner written down in front of you for every runner in the race.

When Mighty Pedrille won the final race for the day at Rosehill last Saturday the race caller said:

He "races well at this track, particularly at this track second up."
One slight problem: Mighty Pedrille's record at the track was nine starts for one win and one placing. Someone sure got it wrong!
