Zariz no luck again

This exciting three year old colt has had a shocking run with barrier draws during the Brisbane Carnival.

In a $175,000 Group 3 Handicap last Saturday he had barrier nine in the 12 horse field as well as top weight of 58kg., at least two kilos more than any other runner.

Zariz started as the $5.50 favourite. He worked hard early to get a position and settled outside the leader Federal Agent. However the double whammy of a poor barrier and 58kg. top weight told over the last 50 metres. Zariz still finished an excellent third, beaten by only half a length.

The race was won by the very smart four year old mare Citichy, who had the big disadvantage of dropping back 150 metres in distance from her last race only one week earlier, where she finished a very unlucky second in a Fillies and Mares Listed event.

To compensate though she gained the services of one of the country's best jockeys, Brett Prebble, who rode a treble at the meeting. She also had barrier one and only 52kg., compared with barrier 10 and 57kg. one week earlier.

Talking about jockeys

Pittance ridden by outstanding hoop Damien Oliver won brilliantly first up at Eagle Farm on June 11. He then contested the above race. Pittance would have been a great winning chance except that his jockey, Darren Beadman, was snookered on the rails behind Federal Agent the entire straight. Pittance never got a look in and was terribly unlucky.

Of course the winner Citichy was ridden by Brett Prebble.

Spirit Of Westbury, who also gained the services of Brett Prebble, won a 2200 metres $175,000 Group 3 Handicap at the same Eagle Farm meeting.

Yet only two weeks earlier on June 9 in a 2215 metres Listed race at Eagle Farm, Spirit Of Westbury had absolutely no luck. From barrier seven he settled well back in the field three wide. He was midfield five wide on the home turn and ran on well, hitting the lead at the 100 before being grabbed on the line. The hard work he did earlier told.

His jockey was also Darren Beadman.

Hawkes "good things"

Ever noticed how short priced John Hawkes trained horses often have bad luck or put in shockers? Remember Evander in Brisbane?

Short priced Hawkes trained horses are no "good things", far from it.

At Randwick Replay started at $3.20, (he showed only $2.50 on the New South Wales tote on the jump.) He settled midfield but found absolutely nothing in the straight and put in a shocker.

Plodders' races

The winner of the 10 horse, 2400 metres restricted handicap at Randwick last Saturday was Expect A Star. This inconsistent, six year old gelding, who had managed just seven wins from 57 starts, paid a paltry $3.40 for the win on SuperTab.

It tells you all you need to know about the race. Also, taking short odds about inconsistent horses is not the policy of the smart punters we know.
