Flemington
Horse Racing Track Bias

Regular visitors to this site by now probably know our view of Flemington horse racing track - it is the worst metropolitan betting track for punters in the country. Yes, even worse than those StrathAyr tracks at Moonee Valley and the Randwick Inner, now sanitised with the name Kensington.

Here is an interesting letter about the Flemington horse racing track that appeared in the Winning Post, Saturday, May 25.

"Last Saturday week, May 11, the meeting at Flemington seemed to me to be conducted on a fair and unbiased surface.

The meeting itself was just an ordinary off-season one, but the track played fair.

Why is it, then, that year after year, Flemington for its derby day is almost always extremely biased and unfair?

I believe the answer to this is that Flemington cannot be prepared in a proper and fair manner for four meetings in eight days.

Isn't it about time that Flemington phased out the training tracks, and built another racetrack in its huge area, in much the same fashion as Sandown or Ballarat.

The shape of the present track should be altered too.

Horses should not be on a continual bend of nearly half a mile as they are at Flemington, from the 1400 to 600 metres at present.

Some of the barriers at Flemington are shocking too and it's about time that the surface and the shape of the track were improved."

Hugh Fraser, Frankston, Victoria.

Here's a humorous posting from our Horse Racing Forum by "OneBet" on May 29, 2002:

"Flemington Roulette???

Hi everyone, I see that the false rail at Flemington today is out a whopping 15 metres for the entire circuit!!! Best of luck to anyone brave enough to bet there.

The Flemington track surface, even when the rail is in its true position, could best be described as unpredictable, but when the rail moves out this far ...... well, it completely changes the racing dynamic. A huge doubt must exist as to where the bias will be.

If you are considering risking your hard-earned at today's meeting there, may I suggest the following guidelines:

1. Look for horses equipped with power steering.
2. Look for jockeys who are blessed with telescopic vision, or who have won a Nobel Prize for physics, or who work part-time as a land surveyor.
3. Look for opportunities where the betting is still open on races that have already been run and won.
4. Look for another venue for your punting dollar!!!

Seriously, folks, proceed with caution when looking for a wager there. And treat the form from today's meeting at Flemington with some suspicion when analysing future form. Often the results don't hold up elsewhere.

If you absolutely must have a bet at Flemington, at least moderate the size of the investment (raffle ticket!) Oh ......... and heaps of luck!
Cheers, OneBet."
