With an usual sweltering heat wave in Victoria of 40 degrees and higher temperatures every day of the week, we decided to leave alone the 18th. January Flemington race meeting.

This left us with just 2 pretty average meetings at Randwick and Doomben, where after checking the fields, we wouldn't have had much action, with most races not rated.

That being the case, as this was going to be our first day back after our end of year/New Year break, we decided our first day back will now be the Saturday meetings on 1st. February.

End of year/New Year break
We had our usual annual break from Saturday 14th. December, 2013 to Saturday, 11th. January, 2014, inclusive.

We rated 12 races from Randwick Kensington, Caulfield and Doomben for 10 Top Four winners.

Here are Top Four winners with bookmaker or tote odds of $4.00 or better available.

Caulfield
Harquila $8.50
Danestroem $4.40

Doomben
Enquare $6.00

Trifectas, First Fours etc.
In Caulfield R3 there was a $471.90 First Four (top 4) and in Caulfield R4 a $286.30 First Four (top 4.) While in Caulfield R2 there was a $150.60 Trifecta (top 4.)

Tips from First By A Nose

First By A Nose is not looking for horses at short odds and whenever a horse is below $4.00 to $5.00 it is below the minimum odds First By A Nose would take.

These results include all the shorter priced horses that win and lose.

First By A Nose had 17 tips.

Winners were Calming Influence, $3.60, Sinjoren, $3.20, and Miniature, $2.80, all at Randwick.

Morning Captain, $5.50, was second by a long head at Doomben, while Encostanatic, $20.00, and Babel, $5.00, both finished second at Randwick.

In our newsletters here we have at times indicated how some first fours and trifectas could have been obtained. However on racedays some judgement and skill are needed for this.

For example the same betting method will not work each race, such as boxing selections, or taking the top horse as a standout to win. Some races will also need to be avoided because the odds are not there.

Even with good information playing trifectas and first fours is not a licence to print money. Intelligent use of the information and a lot of discipline is required.

While there can be substantial collects for relatively small outlays there can also be long runs of outs with various betting methods used.
