Bomber Bill, has returned from a spell in good shape with an excellent second to Spinning Hill. Thong Classic won a grinding effort in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. He could be the best local chance in the Melbourne Cup. But we now have the ridiculous situation that the winner of the Moonee Valley Gold Cup, a traditional lead up race to the Melbourne Cup, might not even get a run. Thong Classic's trainer, Pat Carey, is understandably fuming. The VRC, in pandering to the connections of overseas horses, including an $80,000 starters' payment for finishing tenth, have changed a number of the qualification rules. Sandmason was shuffled backon the home turn, but when clear finished better than anything in the Moonee Valley Gold Cup. An excellent Melbourne Cup trial. Royal Code won the Crystal Mile despite the tough run wide throughout. Excellerator in the same race finished very strongly despite never being on the track and carrying top weight of 58kg. Oregon Seal's run was too bad to be true in the Tesio Stakes. Again the perils of barrier one at Moonee Valley.
