2/4/2005 edition

A.J.C. Australian Derby Day

Betting tips

Let's have a look at some of the betting from the big meeting at Randwick last Saturday. Also keep in mind that the track was deteriorating. It started as a rain affected Slow track, and after the fifth race was downgraded to Heavy. That of course meant the fifth race was run on a Heavy track.

1. In the first race of the day, a 2YO Group 3 Handicap run over 1600 metres, Paratroopers was backed from $1.70 to $1.60 odds on favourite.

a) This 2YO colt was racing over 1600 metres for the first time.

b)
Paratroopers was carrying 57kg., 3kg. more than the next runner.

c) Paratroopers had never raced on rain affected going. His only four starts were on Good rated tracks.

d)
In the field of 12, Paratroopers finished seventh, beaten by more than nine lengths.

e)
Corey Brown told stewards that with his big weight Paratroopers was never travelling well and was never comfortable in the rain affected going.

f)
Taking $1.60 was absolutely crazy. As the saying goes, "A fool and his money are quickly parted."

2. In the last race of the day, a 3YO Fillies Group 3 over 2000 metres, Pleasure Ground was the subject of a big go, being plunged from $6.00 to $4.40.

a) This 3YO filly was racing over 2000 metres for the first time.

b)
Pleasure Ground had never raced on a rain affected Heavy track. The worst she had raced on was a Dead rated track.

c) In the field of 15, Pleasure Ground finished fourteenth, beaten by 39 lengths.

d)
Pleasure Ground's jockey Rhys McLeod and trainer, Bill Prain, both told stewards that the filly did not handle the Heavy track.

e)
So much for it being smart, insider money plunging the filly. They didn't even know the filly was a duffer in the wet! As the saying goes, "Mugs and their money are quickly parted."
