Carnival Horse Racing Tips

Here are some horses whose runs were worth noting from Caulfield last Saturday:

Natural Blitz was badly held up in the straight. This 3YO colt finished strongly, going down in a photo to Blur.

The John Hawkes trained I Scream is looking for more distance. He was noticed making up good ground in the straight over the 1200 metres.

Debrief didn't have much go right and was hard held with nowhere to go behind the leaders approaching the finishing line.

Fair Embrace was very unlucky in the Group 2 Weight For Age Schillaci Stakes run over 1100 metres. While Spinning Hill was a top winner with a barnstorming finish, Fair Embrace was boxed in behind the leaders with nowhere to go in the straight. The 4YO mare was only beaten by a couple of lengths.

Thong Classic is back to his best. The hard work early, out wide, told over the last 100 metres of the 2400 metres Group 2 Handicap. With a cosier run Thong Classic would have won instead of finishing a close third to The Secondmortgage.

Choisir set a scintillating pace in the 1600 metres 3YO Group 1 Caulfield Guineas. The Paul Perry trained colt did well to hold on for third.

Chairman's Choice put in a huge run in the Group 1 Toorak Handicap run over 1600 metres. Well back and held up in the straight, he flew home to finish fifth, just behind the leaders. This classy 4YO gelding has six wins from 14 starts.

Pernod was unlucky in the same race. The 5YO mare, the $5.00 second favourite, was hampered in the straight at a vital stage by Scenic Peak, who finished second to Shot Of Thunder, beaten a nose. This cost Pernod the race and she won a protest against Scenic Peak.

Punters on the Len Treloar trained 4YO mare Woodwina, can count themselves unlucky in the last. The mare was badly held up for a run in the straight. She flew home over the last 75 and finished fifth. With luck in running she would have been right in the finish at the nice odds of $17.00.

You Need Top Odds

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites and the poor value tote horses to make up for the big unders on the tote.

If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.
