Racecaller Betting Tips
and
Form Analysis:
We are Fair

Continued from previous page

Last Saturday, as the horses were entering the barriers for the second race, Brisbane racecaller Alan Thomas, presented his opinion about how track conditions affect horses:

"The sting would be just out of the ground for the meeting today. I don't think it would affect too many horses or any horse at all really. A little bit of cushion in the turf will help all horses."

That is just not ncorrect. Horses are individuals and track conditions affect horses differently. The most extreme example was the Fast track champion of the 1980s, Vo Rogue, who won back to back Australian Cups in 1989 and 1990 with his tearway leader style of racing. The gelding was an absolute wet track duffer and wouldn't race with "a little bit of cushion in the turf." Top Sydney gelding Defier is regularly scratched these days when there is "a little bit of cushion in the turf."

Architrave, whose sire is Woodman, won that Brisbane race, which led Alan Thomas to say:

"He's probably the best backed in the race. (Really? He firmed marginally from $5.00 to $4.60. Levante firmed from $6.00 to $5.50 and Hell Raiser from $7.50 to $7.00.)

Alan Thomas continued:

"The Woodman with the sting out of the ground. Gee, they're good in the wet, those Woodmans, fair dinkum. Anyone who wants to buy a wet tracker you just got to go and buy a Woodman. They're the best wet track breed in the country bar none, Woodmans." (That is very debatable.)

The Brisbane track was rated Dead, and was upgraded after race four to Good. So it turned out to be irrelevant whether Architrave was a wet tracker or not. You don't need a wet tracker to win on a track that is on the better side of Dead.
