Betting Tips from Caulfield

This 3YO filly won a 3YO Open over 1200 metres at Flemington on January 1 carrying 53kg. Last Saturday at Caulfield she rose in weight from 53kg. to 58kg. She also rose in distance to 1400 metres. In the field of seven she was backed from $3.50 to $2.90. No value. She struggled under the increased weight and finished second.

The Mighty Lions - not so mighty

Sent out the $2.50 favourite in a 2000 metres Fillies and Mares Open, this 4YO mare was under the odds. She was a last start winner three weeks earlier, but only in only a mares restricted race at Sandown. While consistent, she also had only won three of her 15 races. Hardly the sort of winning strike rate to give you confidence about taking $2.50. From barrier eight of 12, two kilos claiming apprentice Michelle Payne had The Mighty Lions wide throughout. The Mighty Lions never really looked like winning and did well to finish second. Bad luck was certainly never factored into the odds of $2.50.

You Little Beaut - paid for last two wins

In the last at Caulfield, a 2020 metres Open, this Tony McEvoy trained 4YO gelding was backed into $3.50 favourite in the field of eight. He had convincingly won his last two starts by four lengths and three lengths. However at Caulfield he rose in weight from 55.5kg. to 58kg. plus started from the widest barrier. He finished third, but struggled under the impost of 58kg.
