Mummify Wins Caulfield Cup

Horses to watch for the Melbourne Cup

With a classy ride, Danny Nikolic took the 4YO Lee Freedman trained gelding to the lead from barrier 13, dictated the race and won the $2.5 million Caulfield Cup. The time of 2:25.98 was impressive. It was only 0.66 seconds outside Diatribe's race and track record.

Apart from Mummify, bearing in mind the Caulfield Cup has proven to be an excellent guide to the Melbourne Cup over the years, other runs worth noting were:

Grey Song
This unheralded 5YO gelding must have surely disproved the "only a wet tracker" theory by now. He went eight wide round the home turn to get a run, searched for a run early in the straight and finished second, full of running. Beaten by only 0.8 lengths.

Distinctly Secret
A top run. New Zealand trainer Mark Walker has this 5YO gelding on target for the Melbourne Cup. Distinctly Secret went wide round the home turn and really hit the line well over the last 150 metres. Finished third, beaten only a length.

Makybe Diva
This David Hall trained 5YO mare out in a great run. After getting well back Glen Boss had difficulty getting a clear run in the straight. The mare finished fourth, only beatn 1.3 lengths.

Zagalia
Got well back in the field. This lightly raced 4YO Clarry Conners' trained mare was then badly inconvenienced and held up at the 150. When Shane Dye got her clear she stormed home for sixth, beaten by only 2.5 lengths.

Hugs Dancer
What has to be asked is why do you bring a jockey from overseas to position the 7YO gelding on the speed and wide throughout the race? Beaten only three lengths in fast time, it was a great run by Hugs Dancer. But once again the folly of not putting a leading local rider on an overseas horse was clearly demonstrated.
