1/8/2003 edition

Adelaide Bookmakers

Are the odds you bet helping to generate plenty of betting interest and betting turnover on Adelaide racing?

Have a look at the starting price markets you provide on a regular basis. Like last Saturday at Cheltenham.

Race seven
Listed Handicap 1450 metres
Starting price market: 146%

Race eight
Restricted 0ly Handicap 1300 metres
Starting price market: 150%

Are you complaining about punters taking their betting dollars to betting exchanges and elsewhere? Are you offering a genuinely competitive betting alternative? Should punters bet into your 130% to 150% markets? Should punters regularly give you phone calls taking starting price odds in markets of 130% to 150%?

If you want to encourage betting interest and betting turnover on Adelaide racing then you'll bet to markets of no more than around 110%. When markets are around 150% it's only a matter of time before all punters realise there is no point betting on Adelaide racing with Adelaide bookmakers. In a competitive marketplace they will find other alternatives for their betting dollars.

What do you think the punters are saying who took top fluctuation $2.60 about Swinging Eagle with you last Saturday only to find out it paid $3.70 on the tote in a tote market of 120%?

What do you think the punters are saying who took top fluctuation $7.00 about Hug A Mug last Saturday only to find out it paid $10.20 on the tote in a tote market of 120%?

For some time now we've stopped pricing horses racing in Adelaide. We've just been wasting our time because it's just too hard to get value fixed odds or top fluctuation bets in markets of 150%.

Footnote:
To non Adelaide bookmakers betting on Saturday Adelaide racing, how about showing some initiative and setting your own competitive markets for Adelaide racing? Not markets of 130% to 150%.

You Need Top Odds

It is just about impossible to get a high enough strike rate backing short priced tote favourites and the poor value tote horses to make up for the big unders on the tote.

If you regularly get poor odds you must lose.

Short priced tote favourites
are losing bets.
