Trainer Watch

Ipswich based trainer Bill Naoum backed up his smart 4YO horse, Daunting Lad at Eagle Farm over 1600 metres on Saturday after Daunting Lad won at the same track a week earlier over just 1200 metres. Daunting Lad, who started at $5.50, won again. Make a note of that in your Black Book.

It was a mixed Saturday at Rosehill for the Tim Martin stable, noted for getting horses set and having a bet.

In the first of the day when the well bred Redoute's Choice 2YO colt, Dubai's Choice, having his first start, was plunged from $2.25 to start at $1.95 and brought home the chocolates.

Backing up two races later, the stable had set the impressive 3YO colt Oh Oklahoma for a first up win. Heavily backed into $2.40, Oh Oklahoma finished second to the Bede Murray trained bolter, Victory Scene which started at $17.00. Mind you, Victory Scene's form coming into the race was not too bad - two wins and a second from three starts including a win at Randwick.

At Flemington the Mick Price stable got off to a good start with their smart 3YO gelding Pompeii Ruler winning over 1800 metres. Pompeii Ruler opened at $3.00, firmed right in to $2.60 - and then wobbled out to $3.30 when money came for the Lee Freedman trained Intramuros, who started the $3.10 favourite and finished fifth.

In the next race, the stable's Safari Sunbeam was plunged from $1.80 to $1.50 and finished second in the small field of four. Backing up the following race, the stable's Jukebox Johnny was also plunged from $1.95 to $1.75 in an Open Handicap over 2520 metres. He finished a well beaten fifth of the eight runners.

After those two losses the bookies were obviously wary of the stable. In the eight of the day they bet short odds about Belzain and sent it out second favourite at $4.80, firming slightly from $5.00. By contrast home state tote odds were $5.50, with $6.40 tote odds available on UniTab. The bookies were right to be wary. Belzain won.
