Romping $18.90
Another Big Odds Winner on Top

Saturday, 31 May, 2008

The highlight has to be the win of Soul Diva, which started at $31.00 at Flemington. It was hard to believe such amazing odds were available about it in a field of just 10 horses. While not top rated, it was third rated and value punters would have backed it.

In our opinion it is quite an achievement finding occasional winners at those odds in the top two or three rated horses, particularly as we don't deliberately fill our top raters with horses at big double figure odds.

We rated 15 races and while the overall strike rate wasn't high, there were some big winners for value punters.

Here are the value winners with bookmaker/tote odds available:

Top rated Kenny Kid, $6.30 won at Morphettville. There were plenty of horses rated on top that were poor odds and should not have been backed by punters looking for value.

Second rated winners offering some value were Straws Lane, $6.60 and Periduki, $5.40, both at Morphettville.

Members using the ratings to back long shots may have had a few dollars on winners Bell Academy $21.10 and the Queensland Oaks winner, Riva San, $26.80, both at Eagle Farm. The top rated horse in the Oaks, Heavenly Glow, at $1.85 was shocking value and should not have been backed by value punters.

A $971.80 first four was in the top five - Eagle Farm, R4.

Overall, it was a tough day for most punters around the country, particularly if they did not bet for value. The ratings reflected the odd results with three winners in the top two and five winners in the top four.

We rated 21 races for six winners on top, seven winners in the top two and a total of 10 winners in the top four on a day when there were some odd results.

Winners on top which offered some value, with bookmaker/tote odds available were:

Maunatrice, $6.00, Sylvan Court, $5.80 and Kaphero, $4.00, all at Moonee Valley; Goodbehaviourbond, $5.40 at Morphettville and Mission Critical, $4.60 at Doomben.

From the top four Manihi Magic, $16.00 and Sir Xaar, $14.40 offered some value, while members looking for long shots from the ratings may have had a few dollars on Kincharm, $35.30, which won R4 at Randwick.

There were a number of trifecta and first four opportunities including the $1,293.80 trifecta in R7 at Moonee Valley where our top rated horse won and the second and third placegetters were in the next six.

We rated 20 races on a tough day.

There were four winners on top, 11 winners in the top three and 13 winners in the top four.

Winners on top which offered some value, with bookmaker/tote odds available were:

Red Element, $4.80 at Moonee Valley, No Wine No Song, $4.20 at Randwick in the Sydney Cup and Montego Bay, $5.00 at Morphettville. All these winners had form lines which gave us greater confidence in them compared to many other top rated horses.

There was not much value around with the other winners.

Please note:
We also provide guidelines to new members on using our betting information for first fours and trifecta betting.

In our newsletters here we have at times indicated how some first fours and trifectas could have been obtained. However on racedays some judgement and skill are needed for this.

For example the same betting method will not work each race, such as boxing selections, or taking the top horse as a standout to win. Some races will also need to be avoided because the odds are not there.

Even with good information playing trifectas and first fours is not a licence to print money. Intelligent use of the information and a lot of discipline is required.

While there can be substantial collects for relatively small outlays there can also be long runs of outs with various betting methods used.
