Form Analysis and Handicapping Tips

Was Pricess Clang a good bet?

Below is what Shane Templeton wrote in his column "The Pocket Talking", Herald Sun, Monday, December 2, 2002.

"Our Clang clanger

SOMETIMES you have to wait or look hard. But the quality galloper will usually be there somewhere at this time of year.

On Saturday, the horse was PRINCESS CLANG, resuming from a spell in a fillies and mares' race at Eagle Farm.

She was coming off a close second in a Group 3 event, after running a tidy eighth to SHOW A HEART in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap.

PRINCESS CLANG had plenty of weight and a wide barrier. All it did was provide better odds. She cruised home and paid $3.80. Pity we spotted it a shade too late."

Did Shane Templeton consider these points?

1. Princess Clang had raced nine times in 2002. The most weight she carried was 54.5kg. - once, and 54kg. - once. Every other start she carried below 54kg. The most weight she had carried to victory was 55.5kg. - in a Gold Coast Class 1 in December last year.

2. On four occasions, when Princess Clang was handicapped from 56.5kg. to 54.5kg. a claiming apprentice was used. That usually indicates a concern about the weight carrying ability of the horse. Possibly not here, as twice the apprentice was Michael Rodd and once Zac Purton. Their claims were a luxury. However the three kilos' claim with David Gray when she was handicapped with 56.5kg. on January 16 must make you wonder.

3. Especially considering that Princess Clang was first up on Saturday with equal top weight of 58.5kg. and no claim was allowed because this was not just an ordinary fillies and mares race worth $24,000 in Brisbane. This was a quality $75,000 race.
