Betting facts from Sandown Guineas Day at Sandown Hillside, Saturday, 14th. November.

The highlight has to be 8YO gelding Zipping winning the $350,000 Group 2, Weight for Age, Sandown Classic for the third consecutive year. Zipping which started as $4.60 second favourite, was trained by Robert Hickmott and ridden by Michael Rodd. Robert Hickmott trained a winning double – the $1.45 favourite Tintern in R1 ridden by Nicholas Hall and Zipping. Nash Rawiller rode a winning double, Greatwall Of China, $13.00 in R3 and Lucky Secret, $2.20 favourite in R5. Kerrin McEvoy also rode a winning double.  Secession, $10.00 in R2 and Kidnapped, $2.10 favourite in R6, the Sandown Guineas. Both these horses were trained by Peter Snowden.

Betting facts from Flemington, Saturday, 7th. November.

Hugh Bowman and Michael Rodd both rode doubles at Flemington. Hugh Bowman’s winners were Poised To Win, $12.00 and Sterling Prince, $18.00.  Hugh Bowman also finished second, beaten by a nose on Silver Spur, $4.80. Michael Rodd’s winners were Raffaello, $4.00 and Sound Journey, $8.50, both trained by Mark Kavanagh.  

Betting facts from Melbourne Cup Day, Tuesday, 3rd. November.

Melbourne Cup winner, Shocking, was a last start metropolitan winner dropping in weight. This form line provides a leg in to plenty of excellent winners. In addition, Shocking was a winner on Derby Day – a proven form line for Cup winners. Shocking’s jockey Corey Brown certainly made up for last year’s second in the Cup, by a nose, on Bauer. It is now becoming more obvious by the year - overlook the overseas runners at your own risk, even if they appear to have no chance. The overseas trainers have worked out what horses to bring here and finished second and third. Crime Scene, brilliantly ridden by Kerrin McEvoy, started at $81.00 and finished second in the Cup. Mourilyan, ridden by Glyn Schofield, started at $21.00 and finished third.  As an aside no trainer or jockey was involved in a winning double on Cup Day.

Betting facts from Derby Day, Saturday, 31st. October.

While the previous Saturday, Cox Plate Day, was a bookmakers’ nightmare with favourites winning six of the nine races, including the first four of the day, at Flemington on Saturday it was a different story.

The day started off with the $2.70 favourite The Comedian finishing a 14 lengths beaten seventh. You can be sure The Comedian’s many supporters did not feel like laughing. Shocking, $4.40, ridden by Michael Rodd, was a winning favourite in the next race. However only one other favourite won for the day in the nine race programme. That was Typhoon Tracy, ridden by Luke Nolen, which bolted in R7 by nearly five lengths. The bookies were cautious and only bet $2.20 about Typhoon Tracy.

Michael Rodd rode a double. Shocking, $4.40 in R2 followed by Faint Perfume, $3.80, in the next race. Luke Nolen also rose a double. Apart from Typhoon Tracy, Luke Nolen won on Headway, $14.00, in R4.
