Sandown - a specialists' track

If you ever doubted how Sandown is a specialists' track you only had to look at the shocking run of $2.60 favourite Delago Brom in the 3YO Group 2 1600 metres Sandown Guineas.

Having his first start at the track the colt was never comfortable. A bump early didn't help, but can hardly be blamed for the colt laying out throughout the race and running wide at the 600. He was eased down and finished last over 40 lengths from the winner, the John Hawkes' trained filly Dextrous, who started at $9.00.

Short odds should never be taken about horses who have not proven themselves at Sandown (or for that matter Moonee Valley). It is doubly risky with horses from New South Wales, who are used to racing in a clockwise direction, not anti-lockwise like in Victoria.

Dextrous - a good thing?

In retrospect, Dextrous should have been a top selection for that race. The filly was an impressive winner of a Fillies Listed race over 1600 metres at Moonee Valley three weeks earlier and returned high ratings' figures. The time was also very smart.

John Hawkes has an excellent record with classy horses in quality races. He appeared to set the filly for the race and did not run her during the four day Flemington Melbourne Cup Carnival.

Importantly, Dextrous was proven at the track. When she resumed from a spell on September 29, she ran a very strong closing third over 1400 metres, carrying 56kg., behind Antique and Homecoming Queen, who both only carried 53.5kg. She was also drawn well in barrier five and dropped one kilo in weight from her Moonee Valley win.

Dextrous is very good. She's definitely worth following at value odds in the Autumn.
