Trainers' Tips
Will that Flop Improve?

1. Dash For Cash flopped dismally in his first attempt at 2400 metres in the Caulfield Cup. He followed up with a slashing run behind Lohnro in the Group 1 Mackinnon Stakes at Flemington over 2000 metres on Derby Day.

Dash For Cash was then sent out the $4.80 favourite in the $500,000 Group 2 Sandown Classic run over 2400 metres.

His trainer, Rick Hore-Lacy believed Dash For Cash's ability to get the 2400 metres was only a small query, and found a number of excuses for Dash For Cash being beaten out of sight in the Caulfield Cup.

At Sandown, Dash For Cash didn't have the best of runs, being trapped three wide throughout from barrier 11 in the field of 13. Jockey Jim Cassidy said that Dash For Cash was a beaten horse at the 600 and failed to respond to his riding.

Dash For Cash finished twelfth, beaten by 17 lengths. A vet's examination after the race revealed an elevated heart rate. If any of us had to keep running over an excessive distance we'd have an elevated heart rate too. Even more so if we were carrying someone on our backs who was whipping us. So much for the 2400 metres being only a small distance query.

2. Trainer Tony McEvoy was very confident of a much improved performance by North Boy in the Listed Kevin Heffernan Plate over 1200 metres, run under Weight for Age conditions.

Two weeks earlier North Boy, had been heavily backed from $6.00 to $4.20 in the Group 1 Salinger Stakes run over 1200 metres at Flemington. North Boy finished twelfth of 16, beaten seven lengths by the winner Rubitano, though admittedly he did not have the best of luck in the race.

With a trip to Hong Kong beckoning, there could be no excuses at Sandown in the small field of five runners. North Boy started at $3.20. He never looked like winning and finished last.
