Newmarket Handicap Day
Betting facts from Flemington, Saturday, 6th. March.


The main race of the day,
the $1,000,000 Group 1 Newmarket Handicap provided an upset with the $6.50 favourite All Silent, ridden by Nicholas Hall and trained by Grahame Begg finishing a well beaten eleventh in the field of 19. Wanted, which started at $13.00, ridden by Luke Nolen and trained by Peter G. Moody, won the race. That was only the 3YO colt's third win from 14 races. Within a matter of seconds after the completion of the race a violent thunderstorm washed out the rest of the meeting. The jockey and trainer combination of Luke Nolen and Peter G. Moody also saluted on $5.00 second Favourite Captain Coltish. For punters backing favourites it was losing meeting with only a $1.85 odds on winner Shaaheq in the first race of the day. Shaaheq was ridden by Steven Arnold and trained by David Hayes. The biggest upset of the day was in R3 - the $300,000 2YO Group 2 VRC Sires' Produce Stakes. The $2.70 favourite, Willow Creek, ridden by Luke Nolen and trained by Peter G. Moody was beaten a short neck by Shamrocker which started at $26.00. Best tote odds of $29.70 were available. Shamrocker was ridden by Glen Boss and trained by Danny O'Brien.


Futurity Stakes Day
Betting facts from Caulfield, Saturday, 27th. February.


Punters backing favourites had a big winning day, with six favourites winning from the nine races. $10 wagered on each favourite at starting price - an outlay of $90 - returned $152 - a profit on turnover of 70%. The two odds on favourites both won. They were Launay $1.65 ridden by Mark Zahra and trained by Peter Snowden and Typhoon Tracy $1.60 which bolted in the $500,000 Group 1 Weight for Age Futurity Stakes by nearly three lengths. Luke Nolen was the jockey and Peter G. Moody the trainer. Glen Boss rode a double, winning the final two races of the day on second favourite Extra Zero $4.60, trained by David Hayes and following up on the $3.80 favourite Berringama, trained by Brian Cox. The biggest upset of the day was Old Jock, ridden by Craig Newitt and trained by Mick Price, winning the Listed Victoria Gold Cup starting at $12.00 in the eight horse field. Mick Price also trained the winner of the following race, the $2.25 favourite Velocitea, ridden by Damien Oliver.


Blue Diamond Stakes Day
Betting facts from Caulfield, Saturday, 20th. February.


It was a day of exciting racing with seven of the nine races won in very tight finishes - three by a long neck, two by a half neck and two by a short head. Punters betting favourites had a winning meeting with Tootsie $5.00, Rightfully Yours $2.70, Set For Fame $2.50 and Denman $1.26 all winning. Dwayne Dunn rode a double - Tootsie and Electromotive which paid best tote odds of $34.70. Electromotive was trained by Lee Freedman. The $1,000,000 Blue Diamond Stakes was won by Star Witness which started at $10.00. Star Witness was trained by Danny O'Brien and ridden by Nicholas Hall. The $3.20 starting price favourite, Beneteau, trained by Paul Messara and ridden by Daniel Ganderton finished third in the field of 15. The other big race of the meeting, the $400,000 Group 1 Oakleigh Plate handicap was won by Starspangledbanner which started at $7.00. Starspangledbanner was trained by Leon Corstens and ridden by Danny Nikolic. In this race the $5.00 starting price favourite, Lucky Secret, trained by Tony Vasil and ridden by Damien Oliver finished eighth in the field of 13, however it was beaten by less than three lengths.
