Facts & Tips

William Reid Stakes Day
Betting facts from Moonee Valley, Saturday, 20th. February.

The main race of the day,
the $500,000 Group 1 Weight for Age William Reid Stakes provided a big upset with the $3.00 favourite Nicconi, ridden by Damien Oliver and trained by David Hayes finishing a well beaten sixth in the field of eight. Turffontein, which started at $12.00, ridden by Glen Boss and trained by Anthony Cummings, won the race. That was only the 5YO entire's fifth win from 30 races. Damien Oliver had already ridden two other beaten favourites earlier in the day - maybe a bad omen. They were Aloha $2.30, trained by Mick Price and Marchelle Belle $4.60, trained by Lee Freedman. Both finished second. Despite that, it was a near break even meeting for favourites punters with three winners. At bookmaker top fluctuation odds they were Linton $4.00, ridden by Michael Rodd and trained by Robert Hickmott, Tollesprit $2.30 ridden by Craig Williams and trained by Shane Fliedner and Zarita $1.95, ridden by Steven Arnold and trained by Pat Hyland. That made a double for Steven Arnold, who also won on Stillme, $12.00 tote odds and trained by Sheila Arnold. Craig Williams also rode a double - Tollesprit and Kaavert for trainer Shaun Dwyer in the final race of the day. It firmed from $26.00 to start at $21.00.

C. F. Orr Stakes Day
Betting facts from Caulfield, Saturday, 6th. February.

In R3 and R7 the two favourites sent out at very short odds on both won.
They were Denman $1.30, ridden by Kerrin McEvoy and trained by Peter Snowden, and Typhoon Tracy $1.40, ridden by Luke Nolen and trained by Peter Moody. Velocitea in R8, starting at $5.00, was the only other favourite to win. It was ridden by Damien Oliver and trained by Mick Price who also trained the winner of the next race, Miss Maren $8.50. It was ridden by Jason Maskiell. The biggest winner of the day was in the first race. It was Bolle $21.00, ridden by Mark Pegus and trained by Barbara Marshman. In the Group 1 Weight for Age C. F. Orr Stakes, Sirmione which started at $81.00, ran an excellent third to Typhoon Tracy. Sirmione was ridden by Dwayne Dunn and trained by the legendary Bart Cummings.

Lightning Stakes Day
Betting facts from Flemington, Saturday, 30th. January.

After plenty of winning weeks favourites punters had to wait until R7 to get their one winner of the meeting. It was Tallow, starting at $2.80, ridden by Corey Brown and trained by Anthony Cummings.  The previous week the trainer/jockey combination of Peter G. Moody and Luke Nolen started four of the eight favourites for one $3.80 winner, Bertonic. This week that same trainer/jockey combination had the beaten favourites of the first three races. They were Willow Creek $3.40 3rd., Captain Coltish $2.00 3rd. and Macedonian $3.20  2nd. Maybe that’s why in R5 the $150,000 Group 3 CS Hayes Stakes, the Peter G. Moody/Luke Nolen Encosta Belief was sent out second favourite at $4.20 to Extra Zero. Encosta Belief finished second and Extra Zero third to the Danny O’Brien trained Take The Rap ridden by Craig Williams, who also won on Tollesprit $4.00, in R2. Danny O’Brien also trained a winning double, having won with Star Witness $5.50 in the first race of the meeting. But back to the trainer/jockey combination of Peter G. Moody and Luke Nolen. They had another three runners at Flemington making a total of seven for the meeting. They were Headway $9.00 which ran fifth in the $500,000 Group 1 Lightning Stakes, Salinas $8.50 which finished tenth in the $150,000 3YO Fillies Group 3 The Vanity and finally in the last race of the day Flying Monty which won starting at $11.00 and paid best tote odds of $14.20 on SuperTab. We wonder how many punters who backed their three losing favourites or their six losing runners in earlier races at the meeting backed Flying Monty? We suspect not very many.
